Sad but very true. I honestly believe that most artists cannot make a living from commissions via the general public. Studios & companies are the ones with the cash!
I know I undercharge my work but I feel that my rate is still fair and way above the minimum wage for England.Get this, If I was to charge a single, full colour illustration at the industry standard it would be between £200-£500 each. THAT’S NORMAL FOR A SINGLE ILLUSTRATION, GUYS.
Yet still 90% of people who email me a quote don’t reply after I have given them my rate. They don’t even realise how much of a bargain they’re getting!
But still, here is my advice for other artists, don’t work under a rate you’re not comfortable with, your time is much better spent working on comics / prints that can be sold online or at events for a continued profit. No matter how much some guy might ask you to put your price down or get a ‘discount’ turn around and tell them to bugger off (preferably in a more professional manner), your time is precious! Always remember that! :3
